The Runaways has been used for novel study in classrooms across Canada and the United States -- with wonderful results. One group of students in Brampton was inspired to visit a local soup kitchen and lend a helping hand. In Winnipeg, a grade six class issued a challenge to the rest of the students in the city to match their donations to the Mustard Seed, a local food bank. Yet another class of Grade 4 students independently carried out a campaign to collect combs, face soap, toothpaste, and toothbrushes, which they packaged and donated to the Main Street Project. This enterprising group of children was able to put together 100 packages!
As a former teacher myself, I know how difficult it is to take on new material. No matter how willing the spirit, the shortage of time for preparation sometimes makes a new commitment seem impossible.
So I've made up some teaching tools to help you out. Please feel free to use them as you see fit.
