Artists on Quadra Island

Today I abandoned my computer and spent the day roaming the quiet country roads of Quadra Island in search of artists' studios. It wasn't that difficult a task, partly because a friend acted as navigator and partly because this was an organized tour, so the studios were clearly marked with signs, AND we had a map. The studios were open to the public from 10 until 4 -- which we had thought would be plenty of time -- but even with six hours, we still didn't get to a Native carver, a glass blower, a plaster sculptor, a guitar maker, a photographer, and a couple of painters. Next year, for sure.

We did see some fabulous soapstone carvings and bronze castings, and we saw the works and workspaces of several potters -- even watched one turning pots on a wheel. She made it look so easy, though I know that's only because she is amazingly skilled. We saw beautiful water colour paintings, as well as oils and acrylics depicting still life compositions, landscapes, and abstracts. We even saw some fantastic jewellery -- custom-made metal and stone pendants -- absolutely gorgeous. But my favourite studio was the Fibre Femme Gallery with its wonderful fibre art pieces -- truly inspirational.

All the artists were friendly and informative and their studios made me green with envy. We found out about summer art programs, toured a bed and breakfast, and had fresh-squeezed lemonade on the porch of one of the studios. One of the artists even offered me some plants from her garden. The art, the artists, the scenery, the weather, and the company all added up to a great day. My friend and I have already agreed to make the tour an annual event.
