I generally have a collection of books sitting around waiting to be read, or -- if I do make a trip to the library -- I am after a specific title. The times I actually wander the stacks with an open mind are few and far between. But my mother, who labels herself a voracious reader, goes through at least four books a week. So I asked her how she decides what to read.
She told me there were a number of factors. She may go searching for a title by a writer she likes, because she wants something comfortable and familiar. On the other hand, she may choose an author because she isn't familiar with the name. On occasion she ferrets out works by authors she's heard of but never read. Sometimes she heads for a particular genre, because she's in the mood for a mystery, something historical, or perhaps a biography. Other times she's simply drawn to a title or a cover. (Keep that in mind, you marketing people.) And sometimes she picks up a book for no other reason than that it is FAT! But, no matter what catches her eye, she always scans the blurb on the cover to ensure the book is going to be something she'll want to read.
How do you choose a book?
